Maryanne Buschini has felt like an artist since she picked up a pencil. She made paper dolls and drew pictures with her mother, and later took art classes and worked on theater sets in high school. Although she started college as a nursing major, she was able to switch back to her love of drawing and painting to study art. She grew up in Valhalla NY, and married her high school sweetheart, John.
While he served in the US Army, Maryanne was able to study art at colleges near his assignments, including the University of Oklahoma, and graduated with a BFA from Kansas State University.
Her husband was stationed in Philadelphia and they settled in the Philadelphia area and started a family. She continued art studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Barnes Foundation, and completed a masters degree in art at the University of the Arts. She worked as a graphic designer for Philadelphia area corporations and nonprofits, and taught art and design in high schools and area colleges, and kept at her painting practice during this time, while also raising their 2 sons.
Researching old black and white photos, Maryanne interprets these images to create narratives of celebration, hard work, family and love.
Snapshots are a catalyst for painting and storytelling. A camera can be used to capture a moment that would have been lost or misunderstood. I use paint to create a conversation and interpret. Personal family photos and those the strike me in storytelling or emotion are often a starting point --I find unexpected results. The narrative in the paintings may be very apparent, create discovery, or uncover secrets for artist and viewer.
Maryanne maintains her art studio in Malvern PA. Her painting has been featured in the Philadelphia and New York area galleries and has been included and received awards in numerous juried shows, including the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia TriState Artists Equity, Art of the State, as well as a solo show in 2019.
